I knew i wanted to draw the skull because it caught my attention immediately. Therefore, i worked most of my compositions around at least one aspect of the skull or antlers. I struggled with choosing between the last and fourth option, but in the end i picked the fourth composition. The last had too much empty space at the top
At first, drawing the Hershey Kiss was a challenge because there are so many creases and bumps. However, when i stopped trying to get every single bump, drawing the kiss became much easier. One of the main problems i faced was getting tired of drawing so many bumps over and over again, which you can see in the last drawing (i got lazy and made the same generic shapes). Overall i like the end product.
Using the white charcoal was very difficult for me. The texture of the charcoal was harder than I am usually used to which made making smooth transitions tricky. Working with adding white (highlights) onto dark paper was difficult to wrap my mind around. It was strange working in reverse and took some getting used to.
Pencil is my favorite medium to work with because it is easy to control and makes creating a smooth transition from light to dark easier. Charcoal on the other hand can be more difficult to create a smooth transition. You also have to be more cautious of the amount of pressure you apply because its easy to get dark very quickly. Stippling is my favorite pen technique, however, it takes ages to complete. Cross hatching is much quicker.
I had never used white and black charcoal together before. At first, i was not a fan. The white charcoal was extremely hard to blend nicely with the black, however, i later found a good technique. By first putting down a layer of white then following with the black and finishing with more white to blend the two together, i was able to get a cleaner blend. I definitely favor the right side, because the folds look more realistic. For this being my first time drawing fabric, i think it turned out very well.
