For this drawing, I chose to incorporate multiple faces by having myself pull a face out of my face. Its supposed to represent how most people have aspects of themselves they don't particularly like and that sometimes we wish we could remove them. Because this concept is somewhat unnerving, I thought it would be interesting to contrast a dark subject with light colors. The pastel pallet and floral background don't necessarily make sense. A dark color pallet would traditionally fit the concept. However, I quite like the juxtaposition. My color pallet is another key element that really pulls the whole piece together. I stuck with incorporating almost only pink, purple, and teal. In compassion to my self portrait last year, I feel like I made major improvements.
How did you accomplish depth and value in your drawing?
I used very little black in this drawing. All of the depth was created by using purple and teal tones. I think i did a good job accurately adding value where it is needed. Last year, my self portrait's face looked very flat. This year I think I did a good job showing the curves of my face.
What is the most important aesthetic quality of your drawing?
I think the color pallet is the most important quality of my piece. Because I used almost exclusively teal, purple, and pink, the piece is cohesive. The color pallet also creates juxtaposition. Typically, people wouldn't think to depict a dark topic in light colors. The contrast between the color and topic makes the piece more thought provoking and interesting. In addition to this, the color pallet made the piece more fun to make. I really enjoy working with unrealistic color pallets.
How were you able to give the viewer an interesting experience with your techniques?
I think the juxtaposition make the view question what this piece is really about. Is it someone who just doesn't care anymore, so everything is bright and happy? Is it someone pretending everything? Or, is it someone who is psychopathic and just genuinely doesn't care about anything? Theres so many different interpretations for any art piece. However, the use of juxtaposition throws people off and opens more doors. The somewhat unrealistic colors also draws people's attention.
Does your drawing evoke feeling and expression?
Depending on how people interpret this piece, people may be able to relate to it. If it is interpreted the way I think about it, as mentioned earlier, then i think almost everyone can relate and feel something. My use of color, subject matter, and juxtaposition all intwined evoke different interpretations and therefore different feelings. Some people may see the color pallet and feel happy. Some may understand the topic and feel sad. Some may see the juxtaposition and be confused. Regardless, I think it does evoke feeling.
