I chose to work with juxtaposition. The idea was to take a young child, which symbolizes youth and innocence, and have them smoking a cigarette, which is associated with maturity and corruption. I decided to use my own baby picture because why not? Although, I kind of regret this because i had such a big head as a child. Believe it or not the drawing is actually pretty proportionate to the real picture. My head was just ridiculously big which really bothers me. I also almost forgot about the cigarette, so i forgot to draw the hand in a position that could hold a cigarette. As a result, the hand looks super weird. I do like that i decided to use both black and white charcoal. I don't know. I guess i kind of hate it but it kind of don't at the same time. I am not really sure how i feel, but whatever.
I totally agree that sometimes the best art store is your surroundings. Your options are limitless because you aren't being held back by feeling the need to use conventional art supplies. Using unconventional materials pushes an artist to think outside the box, use objects in completely original ways, and create some of the most unique art out there. Sometimes people get in creative ruts. Making the decision to use an unusual material can be enough to inspire a new piece. Also, art supplies can get super expensive, and as a broke kid trying to make art i can appreciate the the money that can be saved by using unconventional objects. Last year, i made a jelly bean piece. I think it turned out really cool and i was super pleased with the outcome. The only downside is that i can't go near jelly beans without feeling sick, so that kind of sucks.
I understand people feel the need to make art seem like it has a curriculum and validate the teaching of art, but honestly i think post modern principles or any principle in art is kind of dumb. Why do we have to categorize art? Isn't art supposed to be free form and out of the box? As artist, aren't we supposed to be able to follow no rules? Why are students being forced to develop pieces around a specific element or principle? I would much rather just make something and not try to figure out which pretty little box it is supposed to fit in. I like making art because i don't have to follow rules or guide lines. Knowing vocabulary isn't essential to making art. You just have to have an idea and be able to execute it.
