The first art project i made this year was inspired by an artist that was featured in an issue of HiFructose Contemporary Art magazine. I can't remember their name, but they made portraits of young girls that had something off about them. For example, one would be missing an eye. This inspired me to create a portrait of a girl that had rainbow colors oozing from her eyes. Prior to this project, I had made one portrait similar to this concept. Creating this drawing help me realize that i really enjoy making portraits that include strange or unsettling elements. It also allowed me to further develop my drawing skills, specifically in drawing hair and working with color.
The last project i made this year, which is still in progress, is inspired by Kehinde wiley. He paints portraits of people with bold and often floral backgrounds. I took a very literal inspiration from his work. I took a picture I had on my phone of my cousin and decided to paint it and add a floral background. I normally never paint. I mean NEVER. I used to hate it, but i decided i should give it another try. Despite my previous hatred, i actually enjoyed painting this piece. I think I did a good job mixing colors and adding the details. I also really like the background and my choice of colors.
